Identifying and Correcting Problematic Normals#
Normals from your Files#
Normals were taken from your file, recalculate normals offline for one file to assess their quality:
Open your file in your preferred viewer.
Spot inconsistent normals.
If you want to correct them using your preferred mesh/ CAD software, check for the following capabilities:
Harmonize/auto-orient normals: this function allows you to orient all the normals of a surface in a given convention.
Flip normals: this function allows you to flip all the normals of the mesh.
If you want to recompute normals manually:
[for VTP format] Recompute the normals with tools such as the pyvista library.
[for other formats] Change the numbering of connectivity (which is simpler if the mesh is made of triangles). Make sure to follow the numbering logic depending on your file format.
Reupload the file to the platform and recompute a Global coefficient by picking it as a reference sample. Check again for its value.
Once you are happy with your fixed normals on your test file, batch it at scale on your other files and reupload them to the platform.
